Solid gastric emptying study demonstrates slightly delayed solid emptying
SHE TWENTY FUCKING YEARS I FINALLY GET SOME ANSWERS!!!!!
COMMENTS:
Kelly B Robinson
Are you familiar with this condition from time spent in the reflux groups.
Kelly B Robinson
Sometimes there is a debate over whether it is functional dyspepsia vs Gastroparesis. Anything over 9% left is considered abnormal and a delay in emptying. There are many things to know about the gastric emptying study. If your test was less than four hours it is not considered Reliable so hopefully you were referred for the four hour test. People’s motility varies from day to day so it is only a measure of your motility on that day. Your Motility could generally be better the day of the test or generally worse. It is a bit of the luck of the draw on how reflective it is of your average motility. PPIs can affect your motility by slowing it down so that may play a factor if you were borderline. Also very important to know that emptying time does not correlate with severity of symptoms. I have been diagnosed with severe Gastroparesis but my Symptoms are mild. There are many others with much better emptying times than me who are much worse symptom wise. If you do have gastroparesis there are many diet changes you need to follow that are quite different than what you follow for GERD.
Tierra M. Nauman
Nope. I literally just got these today.
Kelly B Robinson
Tierra M. Nauman just wondering if you have been following any discussions on gastroparesis on these GERD groups. It comes up occasionally. That’s how I knew to ask for the test.
Tierra M.
Nauman It took me nearly twenty years just to get an endoscopy which came back normal.
Aliza Kessler
Did it tell you the percentage? You definitely should make an appointment to discuss this. I have this too.
Kelly B Robinson
Both Aliza and I were diagnosed at the same time with Gastroparesis.
Kelly B Robinson
Aliza Kessler I laughed when I saw you chime in right after me. 😂
Aliza Kessler
Kelly B Robinson I haven't been active on this group at all. I just happened to open my fb and this popped up.
Tierra M. Nauman
Not yet. I just had the test today as well as the results. I'll be setting up an appointment in the morning.
Vincent Shelnutt
What are the symptoms.? I’ve never heard of this.
Lakin Bronkar
Vincent Shelnutt my symptoms were nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, and feeling of fullness after a small meal.
Kelly B Robinson
The two disorders delayed gastric emptying are indicative is Gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia and the distinction between the two is debated in the medical field. Symptoms of Gastroparesis can include nausea And vomiting, GERD symptoms, stomach and epigastric pain and discomfort, burping, LPR, constipation, sulphur burps, early feeling of fullness, lack of appetite, bloating.
S L Underwood
Kelly So I wonder if mine is caused by something opposite since I never feel full, even after large meals.
Noa Shay
Kelly B Robinson may i ask if the treatment for gastroparesis is known for being helpful with gerd symptoms ? i'm waiting for my test appointment (the gastric emptying study) and i wonder if besides another diagnosis, if it can actually help managing symptoms.

Noa Shay diet modifications such as smaller more frequent meals are usually the first step in treating gastroparesis (GP). If that doesn't work then there are some medications you can try to help with you're GP. I currently take Reglan 4x per day (before meals and bed) to help with my GP. Sometimes Erythromycin or Domperidone (which is hard to get in the US) is utilized instead of Reglan because of the potential side effects of reglan. I'm managing mine with the combination of diet modifications and medication. I also take some nausea medication as necessary when I get really naseous. The treatment for my GP hasn't really been helpful for my GERD; however it is known that Reglan may help GERD.
Noa Shay
Lakin Bronkar thank you for the comment. i just googled the drugs names cause i'm not from the US (different names over here). i just did a menometry and apparently my LES function is pretty good, which is not with correlation with my symptoms, so my dr suggested the gastric emptying test, suggesting maybe the GERD is secondary to something else. that's why i asked. i really don't get this disease. i think i'm gonna ask for Reglan anyway, cause i have nausea ALL the time lately. again, thanks for the comment!
Lakin Bronkar
Noa Shay Reglan is an older antinausea drug. There are other medications such as Zofran, Phenergan, Benadryl, Hydroxyzine, and others that will help with nausea; you may want to look into them. I will say that even with Reglan I will get naseous, that's when my Phenergan comes into play. Zofran and Phenergan are the most commonly used ones here in the US. Zofran didn't work for me but I know that it work for many other people.
Kelly B Robinson
Noa Shay you do not want to try reglan as your first motility drug. Overall, domperidone is considered much safer. Many doctors will not prescribe reglan because it is known to cause somewhat frequently, tardive dyskinesia (Parkinson’s like symptoms) which can be permanent. That being said, many people do well using it. There is just significant risk. There is a potential cardiac risk with domperidone but the studies used to extrapolate that risk are questionable. I will post an a very good article about the the Domperidone controversy so you can see why it is very hard to obtain in the USA. I am in Canada and that’s is where most Americans get it from. I would say the Cardiac risk is very small. Of course domperidone can have other smaller side effects and it does not help everyone and it sometimes helps but then loses its efficacy.
Noa Shay
Kelly B Robinson it's funny, i'm from israel and they prescribe reglan here like candy, for anyone with mild nausea. i'll ask my dr, maybe the other one will be a better option as you said, we have it here too and it's also relatively easy prescribed. the thing is, for reglan i can complain about nausea and get it but the domperidone will require results of the gastric emptying test (which will take months to get done).
Noa Shay
thanks for all the info!! much appreciated.
Kelly B Robinson
Well it’s interesting. I first joined all these groups due to lpr/gerd. Than I moved into the Gastroparesis groups. I had learned in my LPR group the seriousness of reglan and knew I never wanted to try it. Later I went to my family doctor (who knows nothing) and inquired if I should take domperidone. He told me a much better drug was metoclopramide. He didn’t tell about any side effects. He made it sound like it was as harmless as Tylenol. I went home and googled and realized that it was the generic name for reglan. In the Gastroparesis groups sometimes a post will ask how many people have had tardive dyskinesia from reglan and way too many people say yes for my comfort level. Make sure you read that domperidone article so you know the issues around it. You should have a baseline ekg before you start to rule out any heart problems and then have them about every four months to make sure there are no cardiac changes. This is all precautionary.
Kelly B Robinson
Noa Shay domperidone also used to be prescribed very commonly for reflux. Since those studies have been done, it is prescribed mostly for Gastroparesis and PPIs are the drugs for GERD/reflux/lpr.
Kelly B Robinson
I concur with Lakin. The two anti nausea drugs most frequently used in North America are zofran and phenergan. Also more and more people are trying cannabis oil. CBD oil. With and without THC depending in their circumstances. I am not sure where Israel currently is on marijuana and medical marijuana. Marinol is a medical marijuana used for nausea.
Meca Holloway
please research Reglan side effects before you take this drug… I was given this as a cocktail in a Migraine and it is now on my list of drugs to not give me…. But to each its on. I just research any drug that is prescribe. Some doctors get paid to write certain prescriptions
Tierra M. Nauman
I was born with acid reflux and until now no doctor has thought it was nessary to run any type of test.
Laura Elizabeth
I have severe Gastroparesis and total digestive tract dysmotility. I recommend joining the Gastroparesis groups, GPACT, etc. If anyone has any questions about Gastroparesis, I'm happy to answer.
Aliza Kessler
I have gp too. Mine is mild though. I have already joined those groups.
Noa Shay
hey, may i ask if treatment (motility drugs?) for GP can help with GERD symptoms?
Kelly B Robinson
Noa Shay yes they can. If food can be moved out of the stomach more quickly it can help cut down on reflux events.
Susie Crang
Had the test. Still have inflamed oseophagus test on day a good day for me showed no reflux so surgeon says nothing can do so still full of acid in chest get terrible pains like heart attack loose my voice can’t tolerate most meds at my wits end. Glad after so long you have an answer what test was it. ? I’m not giving up need answers hope all goes well now for you.
Meca Holloway
Have you had the test they stick the tube down your nose to your Esophagus and make you drink water and apple sauce.. My results didn't come back to good
Aliza Kessler
This is a gastric emptying study. Basically you eat food every hour for four hours and they see how long it takes for your stomach to digest.
Tierra M. Nauman
Gastric emptying study, the feed you food with a small amount of radioactive liquid in it and take a PeT scan every hour for 4-5 hours to see how long it takes for to get to your small intestine.
Daisy Miller
wow what test is this? this is amazing!
Aliza Kessler
Gastric emptying stomach study test

Tierra M. Nauman
^yep. It's where they fed you radioactive eggs and toast and monitor how long it takes to reach your small intestine.
Hi Tierra, Your gastric emptying study came back and showed a very mild delay in your emptying. It is possible that this is contributing to your symptoms and it may be good to have you come in to discuss next steps. I see you have follow up in july but if you would like to beseen prior to that let me know and we can work something out.
