Has anyone on PPI's ended up with a low white blood cell count?
Has anyone on PPI's ended up with a low white blood cell count? I've been fatigued lately so went for blood work last week and had a below normal WBC count. I was on PPI's for 5 months and weaned off about a week ago. My WBC count was normal in previous tests and PPIs were the only meds I added so did some research and found that although "rare" it IS a side effect. I hope that's what it is and now that I'm off PPI's my WBC will increase. I have to get retested in 3 months. It doesn't sound common but thought it was worth mentioning

Sabrina I've never had a low WBC. Do they know that it's for sure from PPI's?
Sabrina Robertson
No they don't know what is causing it. I guess I'm hoping that's what it is so it's nothing else. It's a rare side effect....maybe 1 in 10,000

I hope it's nothing else too, Keep me informed!

I had a low WBC after weaning of ppis follow up test was ok, so don't worry, have you a cold or an infection ATM as this affects test. Sabrina Robertson how's your reflux these days?
Sabrina Robertson
Thanks Vanessa! My doc asked if I was sick or coming down with something but I wasn't. She never considered PPI's but my research clearly shows it can be a side effect so I'm sure hoping that's what it is. I'm doing pretty good. My reflux is silent so sometimes it's hard to tell but the more phelgm or hoarseness the more I'm refluxing I presume. I feel my symptoms are no worse than when I was on PPI's so I'm glad to be off them and will continue with my other regime

Let hope the WBC is just a bleep! Like mine 😊 what diet are you following now& any supplements?
Sabrina Robertson
I have eliminated gluten grains and milk, take DGL and enzymes with protein meals, and take magnesium, zinc carnosine, l-glutamine, and probiotics daily. I also drink alkaline water, use a wedge pillow and drink a ACV tonic daily. What about you? How long have you been off PPI's, what is your regime and how is it working?

I've been off the ppis nearly a year, feeling better in myself for being off them, but not totally relieved! I have been told I have a slight lapse at the LES opening, I've had 2 x endoscope, one showed I had an ulcer, another esophagitis, had the 24 ph test to see if I could be a candidate for linx but on this particular day, no reflux!!! I follow a paleo diet, also taking into consideration the fodmap foods, some weeks are great, then others are awful, seems to be no fix really although I am 50% better with the diet :) I have a lazy bowel sometime which seem to coincide with monthly cycle, I'm 48 keep very fit, had reflux for 4yrs & diagnosed SIBO ( rec caused by ppis) I'm wondering are all these changes in my digestive system reflect my age & hormone changes?! Sorry my thread is so long! Seems to be a lot of ladies my age out there with digestive issues!

I have considered paleo but I'm not quite brave enough yet. I'm 56 and never had any issues until a few years ago and believe it's all somehow related to my digestion. I haven't been tested for either SIBO or candida but have symptoms and was on long term antibiotic so believe they could be issues and possibly even low stomach acid. Have you looked into Zinc carnisone and l-glutamine .....zinc carnisone especially is supposed to be excellant for stomach ulcers, SIBO, h pylori and other digestive problems.

Antibiotics play havoc with the digestive system, in the uk no dr advises a probiotic after anti b treatment, I think if they did people wouldnt suffer with digestive issues as much!? I will look into the supplements you have mentioned, thanks for that.
