'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

Anybody experience panic attacks or really bad anxiety at night? and my GERD is really bad right now

Anybody experience panic attacks or really bad anxiety at night? It kept me up all night the last two nights and my GERD is really bad right now. If I wake up before 9am I have to vomit. Any advice? I take protonix and that's it. I'm really struggling. Also I have asthma and I feel like all 3 problems just work against each other keeping me miserable.

I do. Also take protonix. They prescribed me Zanex for the anxiety attacks. Horrible when you don’t sleep for days.

I almost feel like the Xanax set it off. I took one two nights ago and have been struggling really badly ever since.

Brad Stowers
Dani Dermody Faulks I stopped taking it too. I wish I had a suggestion but I struggle with the same scenario and have for years.

Beth Ellyn Andrews Poore
Do you have mucus issues too??

Brad Stowers
Beth Ellyn Andrews Poore yes. Although I’ve been free of “globus”for a couple months now after having a terrible bout for several months prior.

I have the same exact problem. I usually prop myself up on 5 pillows and wait for it to pass which I know isn’t very helpful. I was up for hours last night myself. I have noticed that not eating after 7 has helped me significantly tho. Last night tho I went to a party and dinner wasn’t even served until 8:30 so I didn’t have a choice. And as crazy as this sounds, I turn on the Air conditioner when I’m having a really bad anxiety attack. For some reason being cold calms me down.

I ended up in such intense back pain just trying to sleep like that and it still didn't help. It was like my whole body was vibrating and all the bad thoughts just racing through my head. I've never experienced something like this before. I don't really get panic attacks

Elizabeth Schoen
Dani, I get them all of the time so this is all too familiar for me. Unfortunately they come on for no reason at all. So I try to manage them as best I can. Just remember that it does pass. I’m sorry you’re dealing with it. I know how horrible it can be. My neck would hurt when I first started propping the pillows up but I’ve gotten used to it. They sell wedge pillows on amazon and I’m thinking about trying one of those. I’d definitely try not eating at least 3 hours prior to bed to see if that helps at all.

Oh and I have an oil diffuser next to my bed and when I’m having a really hard time with anxiety, I diffuse lavender oil and peppermint. It helps calm me down as well.

Dani Dermody Faulks
I haven't eaten in 24 hours and I'm still not hungry 😭😭 it's really taking its toll on me. I need some peppermint oil that has helped me in the past. I have a wedge pillow the pillow propping just doesn't seem to help. It has in the past for my reflux but my anxiety it's like I still can't get my chest to open. And I have very large breasts so sometimes I have to have by breasts "underneath" me just to breathe. Similar to childs pose. I have to get my boobs away from my lungs and it's easier said than done I can say that much

Elizabeth Schoen
Yea that does sound difficult. I’m sorry you’re going through it. It’s truly terrible. Feel better!

Dani Dermody Faulks
Thank you for the kind words and advice!!

Poore I listen to utube sleep inducing music n hypnotic ones as well. Helps me tremendously!!!

i have been up the last several weeks with acid reflux and end up staying up several hours before i can even lay down. I have anxiety issues as well.

Brandy Crabbs- Hayes
I experience the same. So aggravating. A lot of times eating helps the anxiety for me which is a double ended sword since it’s not good to eat then lay back down 🤷🏼‍♀️😣

I started having nighttime panic attacks when my GERD started flaring up last year :/
I tried breathing exercises, getting up and walking around, stretching, etc but honestly what ended up helping me calm down was a random YouTube channel where the guys voice soothes me. It's not even about anxiety or trying to be calming in any way, it's about the Simpsons haha. I just find that watching those eases me and helps me relax if I'm mid-panic attack. Do you think any music, TV shows, podcasts, etc will help distract you? Even if you can't fall asleep with it on, maybe it will help your body stop the panic symptoms if your brain is focusing on something else.

Dani Dermody Faulks
I'm sure there's a show that I could find honestly I just was trying so hard to just go to sleep I was determined to not turn on the TV!! Once I'm up, I'm up, and I really didn't think it was gonna stick around like it did!

I use magnesium glycinate supplements daily usually we r deficient in many minerals due to bad absorption

What time are you eating dinner? Try not eating food after 5-6 pm and see if the GERD still affect you. So sorry you are experiencing theses issues. Try to think about positive thoughts, that things will be better. Maybe try to soak in a tub of epsom salt in the early evening. Sip on h20 to stay hydrated. Best of luck. Keep us posted.

Dani Dermody Faulks
Thanks so much. I'm feeling a little better now! Water kept me going lol.

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Dani Dermody Faulks do you take Magnesium? That might help you relax also.

Dani Dermody Faulks
No just protonix! It's been awhile since I've been back to gastric

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Dani Dermody Faulks did the panic issues start after starting the rx? If so, i would discuss with the dr. And pharmacist.

Dani Dermody Faulks
No I've been on protonix for a long time. This is the first real panic attack I've had. I've struggled with anxiety for several years but I do not think they are related. I was born in the 90's. Heavily medicated as a kid. I'll say that much

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Dani Dermody Faulks you are way to young to have these issues. Take care of yourself and try to reduce any stress in your life. I know, easier said than done.

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Dani Dermody Faulks just saw this on instagram..... it is so true. Try to stay positive. God Bless!

Dani Dermody Faulks
I'm trying lol. I own my own business and run it with my husband. While also taking care of our two year old. I really try to minimize stress but I've been a worry wart since college

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Dani Dermody Faulks i get it. Try to relax and enjoy your husband and kiddo. I am in NO way knocking it. Just saw that post and it is so true for ALL of US to remember.

Dani Dermody Faulks
Thank y'all so much for the kind words and advice. I'm still open to more of course, I just wanted to show my appreciation. I've struggled with GERD about 6 years now my whole life changed as a freshman in college. It's better than most but I'm also very sensitive emotionally with it. I used to think I just was a nervous puker before going on dates but any direction my mind goes my belly is right there following 😅 I've been incredibly stressed lately but I've never had a panic attack like I did practically all day yesterday. Do any of you use CBD oil or THC to help with problems? And is there any alcohol that doesn't make you incredibly sick after?? Just wondering.

Xanax-I only recommend it in small doses. On a regular dose it made my anxiety worse! In small dose ONLY as-needed it sometimes helped. One reason is because at a higher dose u can sometimes a panic attack as it wears off.
Ppis- they made me feel like I had asthma! Even though I do not! I stopped immediately and take Zantac as needed. I only take like 30mg of zantac at a time, with chewable Pepcid as needed. I also drink aloe glow for raw throat.

Dani Dermody Faulks
I only took a .25 but in retrospect I had drank that night so maybe it was more powerful. I know you're not supposed to mix I hadnt thought about it!! But I read that GERD is like a "leading cause " of nighttime anxiety and panic attacks while sleeping. So I thought maybe more of us out there lol. I know indigestion at times has made it very difficult to breathe and trigger my anxiety.

Paijo
Chew some gingers! Not only it will ease the nausea but also help you to burp. Mostly anxiety happens when there's too much gas in your stomach.

Angie Boone
I have awful anxiety and panic attacks. It seems my anxiety triggers the stomach issues and then my stomach issues make my anxiety worse. Its a vicious cycle. Just know youre not alone.

Angie Boone
I take ativan for ny anxiety and it does calm me down. Maybe ask your dr about switching meds. Xanax never helped me. But were all different. I hope you feel better soon. I know what youre going threw and it sucks!

Julio Jalandoni
Yes, I was given xanor by my doctor should panic attacks happen.

Cindy Quesenberry
Been there many times hon...know just how you feel. What has helped me at times is 2 Benedryl, (helps relax you and ease anxiety), then take a warm bath which will help you relax even more, then drink a mug of chamomile tea...which also calms you down. That is my recipe anyway. Also magnesium 400 mg daily is good for anxiety, relaxes our muscles and helps with digestion and sleep!
BUT, always consult your doctor before trying any new meds. Benedryl and Magnesium are both safe, but if you've never taken them, it's best to be careful, especially if you're already taken other medicine, to make sure there would be no problems :).

Oh yeah! Held out for a longgg time but caved in at Drs request. I take .5 (lowest dose) of Klonopin when needed and its been a LIVE SAVER!!!!! Had I known this sooner I would have and should have done something about it a while back. I tried the Xanex 1st but it was awful and knocked me out in like 5 mins! Klonopin doesnt do that and ALL of my GERD symptoms go away 10 mins after taking one and usually lasts a few days for me.
