'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

What prescription strength medicine does everyone take for their GERD?

What prescription strength medicine does everyone take for their GERD? My insurance is going to stop coverage on my Omeprazole and I've been on it for over 10 years now. I can't afford to buy OTC.

COMMENTS:

Will Whitlock
what insurance?

Chelsea Megan B
I have Medicaid.

Kathryn Wilkinson
Do you know what medicine it is going to cover?

Chelsea Megan B
Kathryn Wilkinson I'm not sure honestly...I just got a letter saying they would stop coverage after September

Kathryn Wilkinson
Chelsea Megan B at least you have some time!

I don’t have Medicaid but maybe there is a spot on their website where you can see which medicines are covered? Your doctor’s office also could find out for you.…Lihat
Chelsea Megan B Kathryn Wilkinson thanks! Yes I may get online or call the insurance company to see what exactly will be covered...I am so grateful I have some time to get it changed too! Whew!

Karen Bailey Wisecarver
Mine stopped covering dicyclomine so I looked up their formulary online and saw what they did cover that was similar. ANd called my doctor's office to see if they could write a new scrip. They did.

Chelsea Megan B
Karen Bailey Wisecarver I also take dicyclomine but for my IBS.

Kenny Churning
Ween yourself off and take acid supplements.

Kenny Churning
Your body isn’t producing enough stomach acid which is causing pressure and pushing your acid upwards causing GERD.

Will Whitlock
some of those comments are not only ignorant they are not even medically correct...

Kenny Churning
Go see a dietary nutritionist and he/she will tell you the same thing. Your gastroenterologist is in bed w/ big Pharma. Expect a script for meds.

Rae Schiavone Garzone
Kenny Churning what do u do to control your reflux

Kenny Churning
I had a endoscopy 2 years ago and was diagnosed w/ gastritis and a hiatal hernia. I’m minimizing all fat intake, drinking oh before every meal for extra stomach acid and trying to get my allergies under control w/ LDN and immunization.

Rae Schiavone
Kenny Churning I am eating low acid low carb. Also not drinking liquids before meals. Am taking licorice tabs. Slippery elm and marshmallow root. A Zantac at night. Will stop that soon.

Rae Schiavone Garzone
No ppi too dangerous

Chelsea Megan B
I also eat a low carb, low acid diet and see a dietician along with my GI doctor...I get sick and vomit all the time without medication though...I have GERD, hiatal hernia, gastroparesis, IBS, and Ulcerative Colitis...I've been sick with my stomach since I was young.

Kenny Churning
Everyone is different. You have to pay attention to what helps you.

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Will Whitlock you truly do NOT know what you are talking about. Alot of people do NOT have enough stomach acid to digest food properly. Its a medical fact, as you age your body produces less and less.

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Chelsea Megan B do you take a good probiotic?

Chelsea Megan B
Kimberly Shields Rodriguez if I had income I would buy some but I've been off probiotics for a few years now

Kenny Churning
Chelsea Megan B you may have OAS. Have you had your allergies checked?

Kenny Churning
Kimberly Shields Rodriguez, I just read a recent longitudinal study and apparently that is not true. I didn’t like the results either. It’s just one study but it was peer reviewed by 50+ scholars so meh. There’s no doubt that so many reflux suffers just need more acid to break down their food though. That is my case anyways

Chelsea Megan B
Kenny Churning what is OAS?

Kenny Churning
Oral Allergy Syndrome. It’s when certain food proteins cross react with environmental allergies. If you are highly allergic to Timothy grass for example, you may have problems eating oranges. Birch trees, apples. Ragweed, bananas. Etc. Medicaid should pay for all necessary allergy testing if that’s what insurance you have.

Chelsea Megan B
Kenny Churning oh thank you..I haven't heard of that but may check into getting tested now

Kenny Churning
Absolutely. I’ve been on allergy shots for almost 2 years. While I’m not seeing significant relief yet, many patients do.

Chelsea Megan B
Kenny Churning that's great that many patients do..I am sorry to hear you haven't had great relief yet but hopefully it will get better!

Kenny Churning
I’m considering LDN. We’ll see what happens.

Chelsea Megan B
Kenny Churning best wishes and luck! Hope you get some relief!

Kimberly Shields Rodriguez
Kenny Churning what is not true? Please post peer review.

Kenny Churning
The fact we loose stomach acid as we age. It’s been debunked apparently. There must be other extraneous variables at play here. I’ll try and find the article. I read it months ago.

Will Whitlock
stop the quack medical advice...its not even believable ...not enough acid LOL it barely takes any as it is and acid is not produced by itself...go get on the LPR site or one with sound medical adivce not quack theories

Kelly B Robinson
Hi Will. I have followed your posts on the various GERD and LPR sites. The last post I saw from you, you were having a consult with C. Daniel Smith. Was that helpful? I am curious as to the results of your visit with him and your impressions of him and his clinic. TIA.

Michelle Bates-Phipps
My insurance stopped coverage of all GERD medications. I have to buy otc. I buy store brands or generic. The cost is relatively close to my former copays.

Chelsea Megan B
Omg that's awful they stopped paying for it all...if I was in a situation where I had income at the moment I would buy it OTC..but I'm in a position where I can't right now so I've got to have something for it...if it flares up I use tums or baking soda to settle it but otherwise off medication I vomit all the time

Michelle Bates-Phipps
I have no other choice. I have multiple chronic illnesses. This is a good part of the reason that I owe $10,000 in consumer debt.

Chelsea Megan B
Michelle Bates-Phipps oh gosh....yes I understand and feel your pain on multiple chronic illnesses.

Kelly Cain Goodman
I LOVE Dexilant, it was a life saver for me. No side effects at all. It is pricey tho. But there are many plans they use for financial help. I get mine free.

Kelly Cain Goodman
My doc sent forms somewhere. I’m really not sure. The docs office did it

Ryan Waddell
Kelly Cain Goodman could really use some help with that. IF you have any info let me know =)

Kelly Cain Goodman
Ryan Waddell I do not know anything the docs office started me off on samples and they took it from there.

Tom Owen
There is pantaprazole insurance covers. Its generic for protonix

Alisha Baggett
That's what my son takes.

Tom Owen Alisha Baggett
me too I switch like every 5 years.

Alisha Baggett Tom Owen
Yeah Nothing worked for Nick but they put him on this about 4 years ago and has done very well with it. But the reflux had already done damage to his Esophogus so yesterday he had the Nissen Fundoplication Surgery. They are keeping him on the pantoprazole because he still has reflux pretty bad but this will help his Esophogus heal.

Tom Owen Alisha Baggett
yup this is my second time on it. Its avgrest ppi.

Brittany Ann Lundblad
Just buy over the counter meds that's what I do.

Joy Stahr
I know you said you can't afford OTC, but just a tip if it comes to that. We buy a 6 week supply of Omeprazole at Sam's Club for $13.

Heather Montgomery
I was on nexium 80mg a day but once the insurance stopped allowing it now I buy over the counter and am down to 20 mgs a day. Have to watch what I drink so no OJ, lemonade or anything that may set it off :/

Laurie Holas Casagrande
Sometimes your doctor can fill out a special form for insurance saying you need this medication and they will pay.

Kelly Blagden
Esemoprazole 40mg per day and ranitidine 300mg xx

Jenny Gormley
I take ACV and over the counter rinitadine

Alecia Juvatopolos
Omeprazole forever it seems... Trying to wean off.

Joy G. Hoover
Chelsea Megan B....My insurance attempted that too a few months ago... Just have your doctor that prescribes it to send the required info to the insurance company verifying that your health issues needs this med. They can not over rule a doctors decision

Karen Bize-Ayala
Make sure your Dr. prescribes a medication that is on your Insurance Company’s FORMULARY. Meds on the insurance formulary are Preferred Meds and can be purchased at a LOWER PRICE.

Paul Devery
Can your doctor write a prescription for a higher strength that isn't available over the counter? Prilosec OTC is 20mg. Ask for 40 mg.

athy Rojas
I just started prescription omeprazole today how long before it starts working if it is going to work? My friend's doctor told her that the over the counter is the same as the prescription.

Mari Keating
Forgive my ignorance, I thought omeprazole was only intended to be short term?

Related Post: What does upper abdomen ultrasound detect in gerd?

Karen Bize-Ayala
It is for short term use.

Paul Devery
Ha ha I've been on PPIs for 15 years. Have to change meds every few years. Previously used Aciphex, Protonix, Dexilant.

Paul Devery
I get annual blood tests to check for calcium magnesium level.

Kenny Churning
Big Pharma knows patients will continue to use PPIs.

Kathy Rojas Mari Keating
what do you mean short term?

Louise Voss
Thurn Karen Bize-Ayala Please realize that people who post on this site have different situations. If this person is following her medical team's instructions, is someone to question that judgment unless they are professional medical experts?
As far as I know, I think that one of the rules for this site that the administrators of this feedback group keep stressing is to not challenge prescribed medical advice from a persons doctor... unless it is stated as just your opinion or experience and claimed as such.

Paul Devery
My GI doctor won't recommend surgery unless I'm on 3 pills a day. I'm at 1-2 a day for 15 years.

Brenda Lee
Well, the reality is some of us are stuck on these meds indefinitely.

Chelsea Megan B
Paul Devery im on omeprazole 40mg 2x daily for 10+ years now...but now my insurance doesn't want to pay for it anymore.

Kenny Churning
What prescription strength medicine for GERD?

Chelsea Megan B
Kenny Churning yes I know it's OTC..butm if you've followed my post I have said that I am currently in a situation where I have no income so that's why my post says "what Prescription meds"

Paul Devery
My new health insurance also won't pay for OTC omeprazole either. The formulary only pays for PPIs that have stopped working.

Paul Devery
Chelsea Megan B I'm tempted to see another GI doc about getting the Nissen surgery. However I'm a member of the FB board for this. The possible complications from surgery are scary. Many regret the surgery.

Chelsea Megan B
Paul Devery I am not familiar with the Nissen surgery...to be honest I've suffered from GERD since I was 16 and I'll be 30 this year but I'm really not that educated with it. I've had about 6-7 upper scopes done including maintenance and emergency scopes but I've never really got in depth with my GI doc about my GERD

Paul Devery
Chelsea Megan B years ago I had a barium swallow test. I was found to have a weak lower esophageal sphincter. Every 4-5 years l have an endoscopy to check for Barrets syndrome that could cause cancer

Paul Devery
I'm 51. Had a colonoscopy a couple years ago. All clear.

Chelsea Megan B
Paul Devery I see..I am sorry to hear you have suffered for so long..I have routine 5 year upper and lower scopes done...my upper is mostly good for me ...I haven't had a Mallory Weiss tear since I was 23 so I've been doing good but my lower is another deal...I have polyps but they are benign thankfully ...lots of inflammation, ulcerative colitis and I have IBS so they've been checking me routinely for Colin cancer (grandpa died from) but everything comes out fine so far! I am glad of that.

Chelsea Megan B
Paul Devery I've heard of barrets syndrome but never studied it so I am unfamiliar with what exactly it is...
Hope your scopes keep coming out clear!

Karen Bize-Ayala
Louise Voss Thurn damn that harmless comment really went deep with you. MY DR. TOLD ME THEY ARE MEANT FOR SHORT TERM USE. My comment in no way challenged anyone’s advice. If it was that harmful I’m sure an admin would have said something. I never suggested she stop taking the meds. She can take them indefinitely if that’s what she wants to do. Her comment NEVER said she was following anyone’s advice. She asked a question, I gave an answer. My comment did not suggest I thought I was a medical expert. You are reaching or having a bad day. How about that. I’m a grown ass woman so your lecture is unnecessary and unwanted. Save it for your children. Have a seat. Don’t come for me unless I send for you.

Karen Bize-Ayala
Louise Voss Thurn Omeprazole oral capsule is used for short-term treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). ... If you stop taking the drug suddenly or don't take it at all: Your acid reflux, heartburn, or ulcer symptoms may not improve. They may even get worse.
Perhaps a rule on this site should be to educate yourself BEFORE you comment🤨🤨

Rod Crist
Paul Devery how did the Dexilant work. Getting ready to start on it

Kathy Rojas Karen Bize-Ayala what is considered "short term"? I'm supposed to be on this 3 months and this thread is scaring the heck out of me.

Chelsea Megan B Karen Bize-Ayala Do you know what meds are for long term?

Karen Bize-Ayala
Kathy Rojas since I have already been accused of giving medical advice I will suggest you Google the medication, ask an Advice Nurse or your Dr. And yes there are long term meds. My mom was a nurse for many years so I did know Omeprazole was meant for short term.

Chelsea Megan B
Karen Bize-Ayala okay I will ask my GI doctor at my appt!

Karen Bize-Ayala
Chelsea Megan B it was originally for short term ( a few weeks) but if necessary can be used for longer. Ask about side effects as you should with any med you are taking or considering taking.
Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. If you are using this medicine without a prescription, follow the instructions on the medicine label.
Best of luck.

Kathy Rojas Karen
Bize-Ayala I thought this group was for providing feedback to each other and a sharing of opinions? Reason I'm asking here is most times I prefer the opinions of people who have experience with medications because the doctors tend to just write prescriptions. I am supposed to be on this for 3 months and I see where someone said 2 weeks?!? Scary!

Chelsea Megan B
Kathy Rojas I have plenty of experience with omeprazole..I've been prescribed it for about 14 years now...only tried nexium for maybe a month in my early twenties but did not help
I appreciate everyone's advice and opinions but in the end it's going to be what my GI doctor and I choose.

Kathy Rojas
Chelsea Megan B I keep seeing "short term" but nobody wants to say what that short term is...is it a day, a week, weeks, months?!?

Chelsea Megan B I saw someone say 3 wks
kinda makes me wonder why I've been on it for 14 years!!

Paul Devery
Chelsea Megan B unfortunately my GI doctor would rather have patients use a low dose of PPI long term than risk stomach or esophageal surgery.

Chelsea Megan B
Paul Devery oh yes! Most definitely, my GI I think feels that way too...and I do well on ppi's ...I have never had a bad side effect from my long term use of omeprazole

Paul Devery
Chelsea Megan B Barretts is when stomach cells get moved into the esophagus. The reaction of the two types of cells causes the disease. Poorly treated reflux often is a cause

Paul Devery
Rod Crist Dexilant takes effect in a couple days.

Chelsea Megan B
Paul Devery thank you for explaining barretts...good thing that it only takes a couple of days

Kathy Rojas
Chelsea Megan B thank you for an answer! Appreciate it.

Kathy Rojas
Paul Devery Barretts is what scares me!

Rod Crist
Paul Devery did it work good

Karen Bize-Ayala
Kathy Rojas apparently my feedback was considered medical advice and not an opinion. Although I’m confused as to why me saying it’s meant for short term is in anyway medical advice. 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️. I have seen comments telling people to go from 20 mg to 40 mg who are not in the medical field but nothing was said to them. I’m here for the same reasons OPINIONS since they are like ears , we all have them.

Paul Devery
Karen Bize-Ayala relax. I'm on a handful of boards for pulmonary embolism. I got kicked out of one board and the admin blocked me after accusing me of giving wrong medical information. And I had just won an Amazon gift card on a board drawing a couple weeks earlier.

Kathy Rojas
Karen Bize-Ayala it says all over the internet "for short term use" but it also says also to follow your doctor's advise. Problem nobody says what short term is. For me short term is a few minutes lol is why I asked. I took it for two days felt no difference and the warnings scare the crap out of me so stopped them. How's that for short term?!?

Mari Keating
I have that beat. Picked up the rx to not appear non- compliant , read the side effects and they're still in the bottle!

Albert Garcia
Try gaviscon its very effective on me..

Paul Devery
Apparently the Gaviscon in the UK is different than that in the US.

Albert Garcia
That omeprazole is not good for long term used.. sometimes gerd caused by low acid and it will only make it worst..

Kathy Rojas
Albert Garcia
love the Gaviscon Advance Aniseed but it's like I put cement in my colon afterwards; it makes me terribly constipated.

Patricia Davis
I saw your on medicad i have both medicaid and medicare. Just a heads up dexilant is covered

Paul Devery
Dexilant worked for a few years. I was on that before switching to omeprazole.

Patricia Davis
Paul Devery i tried protonix first and it wasnt strong enough. Love my dexilant i finally feel human

Paul Devery
Patricia Davis I had started with Aciphex. Later used Protonix, then Dexilant, now omeprazole. When I was in the hospital last year, they only had Protonix that didn't work well. Surprisingly considering that I was in Intensive Care.

Patricia Davis
Paul Devery my hospital the same thing only protonix and if hubby brings my dexilant from home they claim i cant take outside meds.

Chelsea Megan B Paul
Devery sounds like you have been through it with your esophagus and trying different meds! I called my insurance today and they told me that the protonix and lansoprazole will be covered so I've got it narrowed down now.

Albert Garcia
That Omeprazole is not good for long term used.. sometimes gerd caused by low acid and it will only make it worst..

Albert Garcia
You must try a healty lifestyle...try to exercise or jogg everyday...

Chelsea Megan B
I do exercise but am unable to run

Albert Garcia
Pls dont rely too much on medicine...it only feels u better for now but it makes your gerd worst..you must try natural remedy like acv and daily excercise.

EKo Prast what is acv?

Kathy Rojas
Ko Prast Apple cider vinegar. It works for some they say but I tried it and got an awful stomach ache.

EKo Prast
apple cider vinegar. It works for some they say but I tried it and got an awful stomach ache.

Patricia Davis
Um hell no. If i even think of acv i would be on floor screaming in pain. Acv only works if low acid. I have extremely high

Chelsea Megan B
I've done acv many times..also baking soda...I do exercise and still got GERD...that's obviously no help

EKo Prast
my doctor just simply state to stay away from any acidic foods & drink, I believe that vinegar is one of them...

Chelsea Megan B
EKo Prast if it works for you then that's great but diet, exercise, and remedies don't always do justice for me so I need medicine to help.

Paul Devery
I fear I would need a different diet than everyone else if no meds.

Patricia Davis
I would be back to not eating without meds. I was getting acid induced pneumonia acid burns in my sinuses. The pain was unreal so i couldnt eat. No way am i going thru that again.

Chelsea Megan B
Absolutely!! I eat a healthy diet..low carb, low acid foods..I exercise and have been losing weight regularly...I also check in with my dietician every couple of months
If i wasnt on meds I'd have reflux from eating a cracker! LoL

Rae Schiavone
Garzone Healing takes time

Chelsea Megan B
Rae Schiavone Garzone it sure does!

Patricia Davis
Chelsea Megan B i am the same. I get reflux from everything. No one particular food is a trigger though obviously certain foods make it way worse.
A low acid diet for me just helps my dexilant work better.

Chelsea Megan B
Patricia Davis absolutely! I do have a few things like red sauce, alcohol, garlic, lemonade, orange juice, apple juice that make it super bad where I would vomit from them but I stay far away from those things!! Plus I've been dieting for many months so I eat healthy food now! :)

Chelsea Megan B
How long does it usually take for a ppi to take effect?

Patricia Davis
Chelsea Megan B when i got to gi i had severe burns in my sinuses from the acid. Repeated bouts of acid induced pneumonia. I started my dexilant within 3 days of starting i noticed significant less acid backflowing up my throat. Within a week i was no longer wet burping constantly and my stomach no longer felt like i was being burned from the inside out. On week 2 i felt completely human again.
I still get flares dont get me wrong and then i do gaviscon extra strength and my reglan for a few days to calm it back down.

Patricia Davis
Chelsea Megan B trick for tomato sauce 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp baking soda added to the sauce neutralizes the acid.

Chelsea Megan B
Patricia Davis oh my goodness...sounds like dexilant is a good one then! I'm sorry to hear that you went through that. Oh thank you so much for the little trick there!! I will use that when I have cheat day on my diet with spaghetti now !! Haha! ;)

Patricia Davis
Chelsea Megan B i love my carbs lol.
Chelsea Megan B Patricia Davis LOL! I used to be like that too but I really need to drop this weight, for I am obese. I figure i better lose it while I'm young now and more active. Haha I want to be healthy again!

Patricia Davis
Chelsea Megan B i am obese but mine is from long term prednisone use.
Plus my gerd has caused me to give up most meats and fruit so without my bread and potatoes not sure whats left to eat

Chelsea Megan B
Patricia Davis yea I miss eating a lot of bread! I do eat red potatoes but I keep the portion size small and don't eat them all the time

Kathy Rojas
Chelsea Megan B I'm not obese but I'm overweight. I cannot run have bad hip and back it would kill me. Not running unless someone I don't want to catch me is chasing me ;-) I do walking with a trainer on youtube.

Chelsea Megan B
Kathy Rojas I am right there w ya! I was in a bad vehicle accident a few yrs ago and it left me w a deal of neck, back, and left hip & leg injuries so I am unable to run myself...I do go on walks w my cane though and I do a routine of strengthening and exercising as my PT and for my diet!

Kathy Rojas
Chelsea Megan B mine is old age lol My back is making a "c" I'm told and I also have osteopenia. Sorry that happened to you :-(

Chelsea Megan B
Kathy Rojas oh goodness I'm sorry to hear that and thank you...it made a big change in my life and how I live but I cope with it
My spine curves at the bottom

Brenda Lee
If you have weak valve(s), there's a good chance you'll be on a PPI for life to limit damage to your esophagus and other delicate tissues. It's just a reality for many of us. Short-term use would be helpful for treating an ulcer or a situation where reflux somehow resolves.
