Esophagus surgery to help correct GERD
Has anyone had esophagus surgery to help correct GERD? Medication and lifestyle changes haven't helped my hoarseness and I'm a singer. When I was scoped in my stomach/esophagus, my sphincter was "wide open".

I have had 2 but both have failed I have heard good and bad about op.
Valerie Louise
How long was your recovery?
Allison Johnston
8 weeks.
Valerie Louise
Were you able to work during any of that time?
Allison Johnston
As long as I didn't lift anything heavy or bend.
Anita Cooke
Valerie Louise was it your upper sphincter that was wipe open or your lower 1?
Anita Cooke
Am just asking cos I had a fundlapacation 3 years ago and now my symptoms are back and I have a hiatal hernia caused by a failed fundlapacation and also severe esophageal dysmotility? And I went for all the testing done and the surgeon has said that the only way to put the hernia back down and stay down is to do a full 360 fundlapacation and because of my esophagus been weak it won't take the operation and there's a possibility that I wouldent be able to eat or drink again he's said that I may find someone who would do the op but he won't and never mentioned about a op that I can have on my esophagus xx.

Can u get surgery for a severe esophageal dysmotility ? If so what kinda surgery do they do ? Can anyone tell me what to look for on Google and YouTube feel like I've been blagged big time thanks xx.

Valerie Louise I had the voice dysfunction due to LPR, did Stretta procedure 3 yrs ago (google it), and no more issues, pills or diet mods.
Valerie Louise
How long was the recovery?
Valerie Louise
How long did it take for your voice to get better?
Carl Melillo
Valerie Louise there really was not recovery, because it is not surgery. You are on soft diet for about a week, however it takes about 8 months to see effects. The procedure builds muscle, strengthens muscle of the LES so it stops or lessens the release of acid upstream..the acid upstream is inflaming your voice box and esophogueus.
Valerie Louise
Carl Melillo thank you! I will ask my doctor about this once the office opens. I have lpr and it sounds like I would be a good candidate for this.
Anita Cooke
Carl Melillo will theses sorts of operations work for when ur esophagus dosent contract correctly do u know?
Carl Melillo
Anita Cooke, tell me more about your exact symptoms and tests you have or have not done, and I will answer.
Anita Cooke
Hi Carl thanks for replying 3 years ago I had a partial fundlapacation I had severe reflux symptoms where I was regurgitating my food I had severe sulfer berps where I would throw up egg taisting sick now my symptoms are back i have had all the useuall tests done again camera down ph swallowing test and last Thursday the surgeon said that now I have a hiatal hernia caused by a failed fundlapacation and also severe esophageal dysmotility whatever the dysmotility I have i don't quite know as yet as I Googled this and found that it could be a number of things a I have rung my surgeons sec to find out more i left that room on Thurs with very vague information no help really at all he said that I needed to loose weight as am only about 2 stone over weight and he said that when ppl loose weight there symptoms disappear but back in 2010 they thought I was wheat intolerant so I did I wheat free diet for 8 months where I did loose quite a lot of weight which dident help at all in fact it actually made me worse am a pretty complex case if u can shed any light on this for me it would be great I've read that there are many things that can be done if your esophagus is not working correctly but I haven't been given any information on this at all I thought I would be having a 2nd fundlapacation op but the surgeon said he would have to do a full 360 wrap as if another partial wrap is done the hernia will just come back up and he said because my esophagus is so weak it wouldent be able to handle it and there is a possibility that i wouldent be able to eat or drink again he's said that I may find someone to do the op but he's having no responsibility for it.

Anita Cooke Sadly, you are on the severe end of the spectrum, the dymobility means that the motor function of the esophagus has been compromised i.e. the esophagus is a complex mechanism of muscles and nerves intertwined to perform a swallow...this compromise of the motor function may have been due to your partial Fundo which failed...also your H hernia is contributing to your symptoms. I think the surgeons are afraid anymore intervention could cause permanent dysphagia. Whether Stretta would be recommended with the above summary would have to be up to the medical community.
Anita Cooke
Do u think I have dysphoria now ? cos all I have been told is the severe esophageal dysmotility he has put me on stronger Meds he said am only young am 42
Anita Cooke Dysphagia
I ment stupid phone.
Carl Melillo
Anita Cooke I believe the risk of Dysphagia is preventing the recommendation for further surgical intervention...Dysphagia with varying severity, is the permanent inability to swallow maybe requiring a feeding tube for life.
Anita Cooke
He should have done the full fundo in the 1st place but he said 3 years ago the same thing that I mite have the inability to swallow bet I had this disfunction 3 years ago and wasent told.

Do u think Carl Carl Melillo that there is a diet that would help at all to make things easier ?
Carl Melillo
Anita Cooke Surely every little bit helps. Smaller meals. Stay regular. Avoid food triggers. Get food digested fast with enzyme supplements and probiotics.Use acid reducers if they help like Zantac, the others have other health effects long term. Remedies like gaviscon advance, ginger tea and drink alkaline water instead of regular.

Am on emoprozole can't function at all without ppi's he's moved me onto them i was lansoprozole he's put me on stronger Meds

Anita Cooke always the tradeoff isn't it, is the symptom worse than the side effect and what are we willing to sacrifice...I love Italian food and wine and enjoy it in abundance but the trade off is symptoms.

Check out Stretta Procedure for Gerds on FB. Good info there. I had Linx in 2015 had to be removed 9 months later due to Achalasia starting to develop. I am doing Stretta at the end of Dec. Good luck!
