Acid reflux being caused by excess stomach acid and treating with anti-acids,
So, this group seems to only support the theory of acid reflux being caused by excess stomach acid and treating with anti-acids, etc? Am I right?
COMMENTS:
Amy Lynn
Natural remedies..positive outlook..are what I consider most helpful. But whatever works.
Heidi T Olah
but it's only about EXCESS HCl, not diminished HCl, right?
Stephanie Parks
Not everyone. I have treated and healed mine all by natural remedies.
Noor Zurani Noordin
please tell yr natural remedies. I want to try.
Stephanie Parks
Noor Zurani Noordin, what has helped me is changing my diet to a low acid, alkalizing diet. No trigger foods for at least 6-9 months, even a year. I followed the books Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook and Cure and The Acid Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health: Restore Your Health by Creating pH Balance in Your Diet. Food is thy medicine and it is so true!! Next, I made sure all my water and liquids were consumed at room temperature. I then started taking DGL tablets. I chewed 3 before each meal and took 3 Digestive Enzyme capsules before each meal. I slowly worked my way up to find the right dosage for my body. 3 of both of those before meals is what my body needed. After about 4-5 months I was able to drop down to two before meals. I also took a good probiotic. One that was 50 Billion and at least 10 or more strains of bacteria as those are the best. Drinking 100% pure Organic Aloe Vera Juice ( I drink the original by Aloe Life) provided lots of healing and relief. Then, little things like maintaining stress (yoga and meditation), making sure not to lie down for a good hour or two after eating and sleeping with my head elevated have all been my remedies. I still have a flare every now and then, but they are so far, few and in between and if I feel a burn come on, I chew on DGL or suck on ginger and I'm golden.
Stephanie Parks
I also found Bone Broth to be very healing, nourishing and beneficial.
Heidi T Olah
my question is whether the group only supports the theory of EXCESS HCl as a cause for reflux.
Sophie Wilks Jordan
Heidi, this group doesn't support any particular theory. It is open to the idea that everyone's symptoms and causes are different. It's here mainly to discuss and support.
Amy Lynn
I guess most of us are looking for a cure...unless a theory helps in the healing....
Matthew Kilborn
Mine was low stomach acid combined with an inflamed gut. Hyperchlorhydria is very rare that's why PPIs do more harm than good. There always is a root cause. Physical problems such as hiatal hernias can cause as well. I'm seeing a chiropractor to fix that currently.
Matthew Kilborn
Physically pulls the sucker down...Takes multiple visits so they dont damage.the stomach...
Barbara Carlino Perkins
Matthew mine is also a hiatal hernia. How many visits is it taking you at the chiropractor? Is it working?
Susan Carnes
Yes, please share your chiropractor experience. Mine told me to have surgery. He's obviously the wrong guy. How'd you find yours? Is it working?
Andrea Marie Ferguson
How did u find out it was low instead of high levels of acid.
Anna Daghall No I think everyone has a different view here. My acid reflux is mainly caused by stress and a small hernia. I was on anti acids for six months, and it didn't help at all so I figured that it wasn't too much stomach that was the issue from me and I now I manage it with life style changes.
Heidi T Olah
So, most people here realise that reflux is caused by low stomach acid? for most people anyway
Christine Lugenbeel
Schultz No...I posted my story earlier...my acid reflux symptoms turned out to me needing a hysterectomy. I also have Hashimotos.
Stephanie Parks
Unfortunately no, that's been one thing I say from the beginning and people have a hard time grasping it. They'd rather listen to their doc tell them otherwise and take the ppi's and wonder why they really never get better.
Heidi T Olah
That's what I thought. so disturbing just seeing talk about PPIs. thanks
Stephanie Parks
I'm with you on that one. I'm very choosy on the posts I comment on and try to offer help
Matthew Kilborn
PPIs destroyed my digestion. Very dangerous to take long term.
Melissa Yerty
Christine Schultz Stables trying to find your story very interested in reading it
Maria Mercieri
Not everyone has low acid.
Stephanie Parks
Not everyone, but a vast majority. Low stomach acid is one of the main causes of GERD. If doctors told you that, they'd be out of business. Conventional medicine has it all wrong, even my doctor admitted that and was all for me treating it naturally. I haven't stepped foot in his office as for over a year as my symptoms have all gone away.
Lisa Thompson
How have you treated it?
Christine Owen
For me low stomach acid due to taking ppi`s long term did more damage to my digestion/ibs,than having reflux.
Stephanie Parks
Stephanie Parks Wean myself off of what? I never took PPI's. So I'm just confused exactly what you are asking?
Stephanie Parks
Lisa Thompson, what has helped me is changing my diet to a low acid, alkalizing diet. No trigger foods for at least 6-9 months, even a year. I have excess acid. In my case my reflux is from too much acid. Everyone is different.
Hayley Marie King
Heidi T Olay I think the group is split, I'm against ppi as made my syptoms worse, trying to follow dr axe now supplements, we would be interested to hear your thoughts, I like this group as everyone tries to help even if people believe different on things.
Pattie Clapperty
I have a hiatal hernia a well and that allows the acid to pour out of my stomach into my esophagus. Lowering the acid production and pH decreases the damage done by that. Still have the reflux, but with lower acid, so still need to address that.
Todd Whiting
It's not excess acid it's the dysfunction or weakening of the LES causing acid to back up. Most people have a structural issue therefore most attempts to correct it fails and is the reason PPIs are so popular and effective.
Audrey Jones McNabb
I think I have low stomach acid and am weaning off ppi's right now, I would love to know more about low stomach acid but it's hard to find info. Anyone have any good links?

I am finding that Pinterest has a lot of information/links regarding low stomach acid. I have been testing out drinking warm water with fresh squeeze lemon in it with or immediately before meals.
Matthew Kilborn
That's a link to doctors that specialize in treating low stomach acid and can test you.
Nicole Green
Heidi T Olah any feedback on what you are doing if ppi's is not working for you. This is a support group for many of us!
Jered Landreth
That is a very generalized statement. I have a degree in nutrition. Most lack adequate stomach acid, bile and digestive enzymes/positive flora , although you have been told the opposite.
Marj Clark
I developed this GERD severely after 2 rounds of antibiotics (one lasted 3 days, the other I took a week later for 9 days). Is it possible 4 months on that my indigestion, burping, reflux and nausea are related to that? It only started severely the weekend I was finishing my treatment and I've not been the same since.
Jered Landreth
Anti biotic wipe out positive intestinal flora and balance . Start taking probiotics and eating Greek yogurt daily . Kefir might be a better choice. Eat paleo.
Jered Landreth
It's directly related . Western doctors are crooks.
Marj Clark
I've been taking probiotics and I'll have a few good days then the sensation of choking/gas/butping/nausea is back. How long does it take? I want off omeprazole since its giving me pains in my side and bowel movements are more difficult, nothing in my lower GI was an issue at all that I knew of before I went on 20mg a day. I'm meant to take 40mg but had to reduce my own dose, the gas was insane after 2 weeks.
Jered Landreth
Audrey Jones McNabb TUDCA, Digestive Enzymes, Apple Cider Vinegar, Alkaline Diet = Your Solutions
Hayley Marie King
Jared Landreth. what's TUDCA mean?
Jered Landreth
tudca is a relatively new BILE SALT, most professional IFBB bodybuilders I do diets for and UFC / Bellator athletes have found this compound to almost fix hearburn issues . TUDCA is a water-soluble bile salt, which is in contrast to regular bile salts possessing both water soluble and fat soluble ends and conferring a detergent effect. This is good for the bile salt's biological purpose (emulsifying fats in the intestines to help with absorption) but when bile acids back up in the liver, a clinical state called cholestasis which occurs when the liver is unhealthy, these bile salts can be damaging to cells by destroying the membranes and signalling for cell death. TUDCA and other water soluble bile salts like UDCA compete with this toxicity and thus indirectly protect cells from death.
Bill Reynolds
I've seen a few internet sites promoting hypochlorhydria as the cause for GERD but have seen nothing from the main stream medical and scientific community. Maybe I need to search more?? The theories seem plausible but it would be helpful to see validating test results. When diagnosing GERD do esophageal pH monitoring, endoscopy, and manometry testing support this theory?
Lupe Avila
It is different for everyone . Some too little acid, some too much.
