I have GERD and also suffer from extreme anxiety with it.
Melanie Hammond
Atif Zuhaib GERD is generally a non-dangerous disease, although the symptoms of GERD may be triggers for panic attacks. Stomach Pressure One of the issues that causes heartburn/acid reflux is pressure around the muscles of the stomach. One of the symptoms of anxiety is muscle tension.

Hi Atif. We all experience it in our lives like worrying before exams or job interview. However, there is an anxiety disorders where the person is always worried about something. There is social anxiety, when person is afraid of some social situations which involve interaction with other people. They often are afraid to be blamed, misunderstood or negatively judged. There is also a health anxiety which is very popular now and there are many people with gerd who also have health anxiety but don't want to admit it. Health anxiety is when the person is always worried about his health, always searching the answers, googles his symptoms, trying to reassure his symptoms with others, constantly going to the hospital, has a lot of different type of symptoms happening and in the end all tests come back negative which means that the person is healthy. Symptoms can be headache, nausea, dizziness, sickness, sleeping problems, pain, muscle cramps, joint pain, tiredness, weakness, palpitations, fast heart rate and etc. A lot of people don't admit that it's something our brain does and they become even more worried about their health and then they get more and more symptoms and they continue going to the doctors more and more often, they often feel that others don't understand them and they feel that they are really having a terrible disease.. of course there are many different levels of health anxiety, for example some people admit and know that they have it and they just stressful about their symptoms and health in general. It also can be another way,for example your gerd can give you an anxiety because you are not able to eat what you like and live your life how you used to before. Usually anxiety is linked to gerd and it's one of the main reasons gerd happens. In general, anxiety is a tendency to overthink everything.
Like some people remember what embarrassed they did 5 years ago and they start to be nervous about that and cannot forget. :) I hope you will find it helpful.

I'm in both because GERD and anxiety can go hand in hand. Anxiety can worsen the GERD...and vice versa. It can be hellish at times.
Marie Roy
Anxiety produces cortisol which can wreak havoc with our bodies, including the GI tract. Lessening anxiety can help relieve some of the symptoms of GERD.

Heela Haya It depends on you as a person as well. There are people who believe only antidepresants can help them and they give all the power and hope to them without trying to get better by putting some effort by themselves and changing their minds naturally. And of course it depends what kind of anxiety you have and how strong it is. Social anxiety can be treated throughout counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy or mindfulness. Generalized anxiety disorder - psychotherapy, lifestyle changes - more exercise, enough sleep, eating healthy, yoga or pilates, meditation, quit smoking, drinking and consuming caffeine, doing what you love, focus on positive and remove things or people from your surroundings who give you negative impact. We are not trees and we can move if we don't like something. If your anxiety is due to your job as your boss is horrible and you feel under pressure - find the strenght to leave that job and etc.in other words, you have to remove the source of stress. If you have health anxiety, first, you have to make sure that you are healthy by doing some tests as you cannot always put everything on stress. When tests come back positive and there is nothing wrong within your body, of course it makes a person feel depressed and angry because he clearly feels physical symptoms so it must be something wrong. So a huge step is to admit, that you are healthy and it's your anxiety. You can educate yourself by reading books about anxiety or placebo effect, finding out how our brain and mind really work, what does pain actually mean and etc. As you have an idea how anxiety works, what is going on with our brain when we have negative thoughts, you will realise why you had that big headache yesterday and why today your hands are weak. It's always good to educate yourself so you can think outside the box. Even our breathing can change a lot!
Of course, very important is to stay fit, healthy and do the things i mentioned above which you have to do when having generalised anxiety disorder. What helps as well is to make a diary of symptoms and feelings. For example I have a diary, where i draw a chart. I write my symptoms everyday and at the bottom i have a note section where i write how i really felt that day, what i was doing and what happened. You will be surprised by results. It does not necessarily mean that you have to be stressful the same day as you had symptoms. No. It can be a stress from previous days or even months depends how big your stress was. Some people don't want to admit anxiety because ''I am not stressful''!!! as they believe that you have to be a super stressful woried person every day, crying and depressing. No. We are all emotionally different. If you are a very sensitive person it will be enough to experience symptoms after few minutes of nervousness about something. Sometimes we have problems which we don't think we are stressful about but deep in our minds we know it and we think about them everyday even we think we don't stress about that. But oh well - that's anxiety. Most popular reason of anxiety in our world by this age is financial problems. So to come back for health anxiety, you have to put yourself in hands and that is not easy to do so.. i chose to meditate instead of medicate and i am very happy with my decision. Now a lot of depressed people won't agree with me and will try to prove that you need antidepresants. But oh well. I had very strong panic attacks, sleepless nights, countlees days lying on the ground, crying and thinking that I am very ill. I was fed up of my symptoms and I could not live my life how i used to before. Sometimes i was not able to get out from my bed. I wanted to die and no one understood me. I tried antidepresants and I found how fake they are. Yes they will make me feel good but they won't remove my problems and won't change my thinking and i didn't want to be addictive from them so i stoped.... i had this condition for few years. Not continuously but it was like coming back for few months and then leaving me for two. But ta-daaam I am here writing this comment. And I could say what helped the most - books. I learnt a lot! And when I have those crazy symptoms coming after some stress I know how to handle them by simply breathing but there are many different techniques to learn about. When you are calm, when you meditate, you will find easier way how to handle stress, you will find yourself more calm and relaxed. As well when you read more and more about the people having anxiety from groups you realise you are not alone and your symptoms are normal. I can write more and more but I'm sure it's too long already. One of my biggest wish in life is people to be happy. Anxiety can be very rough. But I believe we are strong enough to beat this little devil from our head. I wish that to everyone. If I could do it,when people thought no hope for me - then everyone can do it. Happiness is a choice.

Or if English is a second language. Or if you accidentally hit the wrong key. Or if you have such terrible symptoms that they’re giving you extreme anxiety to the point of turning to a group of strangers on the internet for help, only to be belittled for a typo. Come on, guy.
