My oesophagus is very red around my voice box and I’m panicking about whether it will heal
Hi, I’m newly diagnosed and terribly nervous/scared. I’d been having a sore throat continuously for about 5 weeks and was diagnosed by my gp. I hadn’t received any information about this disease and literally have googled everything. I had an ENT appointment yesterday and have been told that my oesophagus is very red around my voice box and I’m panicking about whether it will heal or progress further. I’m currently on lansoeprazole 30mg and have been for a week but showing no signs of improvement. I feel weak, lethargic, and get headaches, sore ears and recently heartburn although hadn’t had this before starting on the meds. I’ve had Ibs for years but this is all new to me and I’m really scared, in pain and clueless. I’m gone from seemingly fit and healthy and loving the gym to feeling like my health is ruined - Amanda Drake.

That's generic Prevacid. You may need to up your dose or switch to Protonix. I've found there's 2 camps with gerd.. Prilosec/Prevacid or Protonix. People get relief with one or the other.

Make sure you are taking your medication correctly as well. I find diet plays a huge part in the healing process. Unfortunately it is not a quick process and takes time. I’m following a low acid diet and have taken all my trigger foods out. I can finally say I am nearly cured but it has taken 12 months of finding out what to do.
Amanda Drake
Thank you. I’m going to have a word with my GP on Monday as he literally diagnosed me over the phone and prescribed me these with no investigations, but ENT seem to have confirmed it is right. I’m just scared about the amount of damage done.
Gigi Robertson
It can take a while before you get results. Just stick to a low acid diet while you heal

I had to come off the lansoprazole (I was on 30 mg twice a day) as I was so lethargic it reduces stomach acid so I don’t think I was absorbing food properly and no appetite. I did acid watcher diet and my voice box healed but it took time. The PPIs didn’t hep. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acid-Watcher-Diet-Prevention-Programme/dp/1781808562 This meant I stopped diary as it’s inflammatory too.

Do you sleep with wedge pillow or raised bed on left. Helps me. Gaviscon advance 10mls after meals initially was helpful and before bed too.
Gigi Robertson
Love this book. It has helped me so much.
Amanda Drake
Eileen Bowdin I don’t have a wedge pillow but I will think about investing in one. I’ve started to take gaviscon after meals now so hopefully I will start to see an improvement. I’m going on holiday in two weeks time and I was so looking forward to it. Now I fear I’ll just be in pain and miserable.
Gigi Robertson
A wedge pillow is great and also don’t eat at least 3 hours before you go to bed.
Eileen Bowdin
Amanda Drake it does help. In the meantime try lots of bedding or pillows under the top of your mattress.
I found spacing out meals helpful to let it heal too. But the types of foods you eat are so important otherwise it won’t heal, that’s why the book was my saviour.
It’s all life changing but I feel more in control of it all now.
Amanda Drake
Gigi Robertson thank you. This is really hard as I finish a gym class at 7.30pm so get home about 8.00pm so sometimes it’s difficult to get the timings for meals within that, especially as I’m falling asleep very quickly at the moment... although I’m up quite a bit in the night.
Eileen Bowdin
Amanda Drake I had to stop sit up or any exercises that compress the stomach as they can cause reflux 😕.
Gigi Robertson
Amanda, you might find your gym class is causing the problem. It takes a bit of reorganising meal times and activities but it’s worth it in the end.
Amanda Drake
Eileen Bowdin yes, I was finding this and I think that’s maybe what brought this to a head. I’d been doing sit ups every day in readiness for holiday before I got Ill.
Amanda Drake
Gigi Robertson I just feel so sad. I live my classes and they are the only ones I can get to with work, but I shall have to maybe have a look at what I can do as I can’t stand feeling this way.
Eileen Bowdin
Amanda Drake when I started the acid watcher diet I lost 1 and 1/2 stone (unintended) completely stopping exercise! No tummy now bonus!!
Gigi Robertson
Amanda, even if you stop for a while till you get better.
Amanda Drake
Thank you both. I don’t need to lose weight but I just love exercising. But I agree that I might need to take time to heal before taking up the late classes again. Luckily I’m now off work for two weeks so I can focus on that.

I think I lost weight because of that..I stopped taking the pill..but now I can't gain anything I'm scared :/.

This is basically the diet I followed the first 16 to 18 or so weeks and I am now 90% healed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaO6gPkBQJo.

I found this was me on a low dose of lansoprazle. Doctors put me on 60mg a day and the symptoms almost gone. Just this week I've been told to reduce to 30mg and I'm finding the past few days the systopms have came back especially at night. The hugest dose did help for me but I was always panicking it was too much x
Amanda Drake
Thank you, I will put this to my gp and see if I need to up the dose. Did you take painkillers at all? Obviously I know ibuprofen is bad, which is what i always used to take, and paracetamol isn’t doing anything. Is there anything I can take?
Michelle Bunney
I was trying not to take any but if needed just paracetamol. Was told not Ibrufoen or paracetamol plus as that's got caffine in and will upset the acid. I was up to 60mg which took about 3 weeks to see a change but it helped. Doctor has just this week dropped me back to 30mg and I'm suffering with burning thoart and tongue again. I'm wondering if I need your go back sooner but I'm trying gavison in between as well that helps x
Michelle Bunney
I used to get sore thoarts an ear pain every night that was the worst for me.
Amanda Drake
Michelle Bunney thank you Michelle. It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone.
Michelle Bunney
Same here. This group has really helped me the past few months when all mine started. It puts your mind at ease your not alone. Cos I don't have worry with every systopm
Liz Bruecher
I know it’s so hard to figure out what could be causing it. Especially if you’re not given any direction. Have you changed anything about your diet, or notice your symptoms are worse more than other times? For me, dairy and gluten are huge triggers. My throat is also very red and slowly been getting better, but my ENT said it could take a year or so before it completely clears up.
Amanda Drake
Thank you for your reply 🙂 I don’t know if there’s a correlation but I’d recently gone back to eating a bit of dairy after being vegan for a while, but it’s the smallest amounts, like the odd yoghurt etc. I’d been drinking a lot of coffee I have to say and I wonder if that was the culprit. I’d also been vaping quite heavily and I have been told that this could also have played a part. I’ve now cut both from my diet and am totally focused on healing and changing the way I eat and drink. I’m wondering if it’s been sneaking up for a long time as I’ve had ibs and digestive problems since I was a teenager but have never really been properly treated.
