'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

Has anyone taken anti-anxiety meds and your reflux has gone away?

Its the whole chicken and egg thing. Does your acid reflux cause anxiety or does your anxiety cause your acid reflux. Has anyone taken anti-anxiety meds and your reflux has gone away?

I was forced on to Klonopin because my anxiety causes my acid reflux and then, I get esophageal spasms and feel like I’m choking to death. I take a 1 mg tablet and within 20-30 minutes? All symptoms are gone! Thank God! My anxiety is torture. So? MICHAEL? The answer is “YES”!

I dont have anxiety issues, but when gerd acts up it definitely affects the nerves. It makes me feel completely hung over and super jittery (like a hangover), overall unwell feeling. My doctor thought it was anxiety, but i call BS. Itll usually come on with clogs ears/pressure in head too.

Deborah D. Mattox Miller nope its not my blood pressure. Its congestion from allergies/histamine intolerance, causes a super itchy nose too. Histamine intolerance also shows up as acid reflux as a symptom

I’m on anti anxiety meds and developed gerd.

I think the connection between the two may be related to dopamine, as dopamine can cause anxiety, and it can also relax the valve at the top of the stomach. That's why drugs like domperidone can help reflux. They're dopamine antagonists. Another drug I take, gabapentin, is a dopamine agonist, and it's made my reflux much worse -- it's also made both my anxiety and depression worse.

Gabapentin is an ancient horrible drug. I was on it for a decade, until I said, “no more”. Best thing I ever did.

Yes, it's the devil, but I have trigeminal and occipital neuralgia, and it's the only thing that keeps my pain at a somewhat bearable level. I'd love to toss it in the trash, but that isn't in the cards for me. Five, maybe six years now on antieptileptics.

I think GERD contributes to anxiety. It's hard not to panic when your pain resembles a heart attack.

Try magnesium glycinate, it's calming, relaxes muscles, good sleep.

For me it was definitely the reflux causing anxiety since i never had problem.with it before but it can definitely be both ways

Not sure which comes first, but I honestly believe stress and anxiety exacerbate GERD. If I take a Klonopin the symptoms reduce and I’m able to sleep. However I’ve read that long term Klonopin (and similar use) can cause your esophageal sphincter to behave differently (muscle relaxation) thus allowing acid reflux. I’m trying to stay off the Klonopin and only use in “emergencies” but it’s hard!

Im on zoloft and ativan for my anxiety.
