'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

I'm due for an endoscopy mid August and I am very fear full of a bad result

Hi all, I'm due for an endoscopy mid August and I am very fear full of a bad result.

Have lived with gerd for the better part of 6years, and treated the whole time with ppis which for majority of the time controlled my symptoms with no major change in diet.

It's probably the last 6 months where I've really changed my lifestyle, lost 35kg, quit all alcohol, no fatty foods, avoid trigger foods (the ones I am aware of). I'm worried that for the most part of my gerd I only relied on ppis.

Has any one here with similar experience went for their endo and still come out with a better than expected / surprising result? Looking for any hope or reassurance at all. Am drowning in anxiety atm.

Hope you are all having a better day than me.

Thanks Rob, hope u get best result possible..Would you say ur situation similar to mine?

Robert J. Morrison
Peter Pancione yes it is very similar. Recently adjusted my diet and take meds every other day. I have stayed away from all trigger foods but occasionally take a chance.

Peter Pancione
Ok thanks mate, all the best for thurs

Robert J. Morrison
Thanks Peter I will let you know. This has been a challenge. Btw are you better off PPIs and your new diet restrictions?

Peter Pancione
Robert J. Morrison the symptoms have been slowly creeping back after I began my wean down to 10mg. Such a frustrating illness

Peter Pancione
When did gerd begin for you Robert ?

I had one a few weeks ago. I was nervous too because I had a constant stomach ache, and always felt kind of sick after eating. Had trouble swallowing, and could feel the acid coming up to my throat. Results were better than I expected. Mild acid damage to esophagus and some scar tissue. Dr. Did a dilation to open up the scar tissue. I was told to stay on the ppi and come in for a check up in 2 months.

Peter Pancione
Oh that's great to hear!! I can only hope for that result..have u suffered with gerd for a while ?

Linda Goldsmith
Peter Pancione Had a swallow test done 4 years ago, and they said I had GERD because they could see narrowing. Suggested an endoscopy, but I never went. When I saw the gastro dr last month before the endo he said Why did you wait 4 years! Which got me very nervous because I thought oh great it’s probably really bad now, but fortunately it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Meds are helping, actually feeling somewhat normal now.

Really glad ur doing well, are ppis new for you?

Linda Goldsmith
Yes. Started them about 5 months ago. I take 20mg omeprazole in the am and 150mg Zantac in the pm and it seems to be the best combo for me. Took some experimenting with doses and time of day to take before I figured out what works.

Peter Pancione
Oh ok very new to them. How did you control the gerd since diagnosis 4years ago, Was it just mild?

Linda Goldsmith
It wasn’t too bad until within the last year. That’s why I didn’t get the endoscopy. I was on OTC Zantac about a year ago and it seemed to clear it up. But then it came back with a vengeance so I got on the omeprazole too. Tums and Gaviscon helps in between doses.

My endoscope came back as having a hernia and the biopsy that was taken came back fine. I also have eliminated fatty foods, triggers, changed my diet and lost weight. I am still having issues but with support from this group and medication hoping to get this under control.

Peter Pancione
Thanks Becky, glad to hear ur fine :).

Peter Pancione
Have u been a gerd sufferer for long Becky?
