'Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestion caused by GERD

My doctor talked about baclofen, a muscle relaxer being helpful for GERD with food reflux

Yesterday was the second time my doctor talked about baclofen, a muscle relaxer being helpful for GERD with food reflux. I've not heard anybody else talking about this before. She wants me to switch from my once daily muscle relaxer for pain/sleep management to 3 times daily muscle relaxer with liquid meals in morning and late night to help prevent food reflux as my current regiment of nexium 1 to 2 times daily, zantac twice daily and gaviscon chewable as needed have the acid symptoms under control. I do not feel food coming up, just find bits in my mouth.

I took baclofen but, it did not work for me.

Would you mind telling me your symptoms? I don't want to take a medication that is going to basically put me in bed if it's not going to help.

More meds seems the wrong approach and direction. Understand you’re looking to improve and stop symptoms. I finally started a small meal low fat diet and have stuck with it for six months. And I get much more exercise and cardio. I do not sit after eating I move around or get out and walk. Most all GERD symptoms as well as quite a bit of weight are gone now.
I’m to wean off of Omeprazole in two months. 60 pounds lighter I only get a bit of a hoarse throat now and then depending how much portion size or fat I eat. My Endoscopy found a small hiatus hernia and I get excessive bile in my stomach no longer having a gallbladder may be contributing to this. The biopsies came back negative so I just had a flare up of Acid Reflux Disease. I’m still obese and have sleep apnea so losing weight and diet/exercise is helping everything! I gave up all red meat including lamb and pork. Instead I eat turkey, fish, lean white meat chicken and some shell fish. I can eat potatoes but limit it to red potatoes and almond milk for dairy occasionally. I can’t eat legumes and raw vegetables so I steam spinach and carrots.
No spices or sauces. It’s a bland diet but I’m used to it. I do gluten free pastas of brown rice and corn blends occasionally. I also use Millet bread. I tested negative for Celiac but have issues with gluten in the past. I eat dark cherries, blueberries and watermelon. Imagine I could eat apples but would eat them with a meal. I do nuts and occasionally a Raw Almond Butter on a slice of light toasted Millet bread. We all are different but my triggers are sugar in foods and fatty and fried foods. Tomato sauces, spicy foods and gravy a No No! I can and will introduce more variety of foods but for now I still need to lose weight.
So my GERD has been a wake up call to get serious and healthier! I started with a three day ordeal in hospital for Stress tests Cat scans and Echo thinking I had heart problems to deciding to Get Serious after being scared out of my wits and dodging a bullet! Now I have to remind myself to eat instead of making a steak at midnight or eating fried chicken wings or fries.
My hoarse throat will remind me to stay focused. I wish everyone the best outcome as we deal with this condition and all these symptoms!❤

I did not realize this...thanks.

Always happy to share knowledge. I have many gi issues and travel 2 hours to see very knowledgeable doctors at University of Michigan. I trust them but I know that there have to be many more people out there like me.

Related Post: Didn't realize gerd/acid reflux could cause so many other problems.

Baclofen was such a bad drug for me. Not so much in regards to reflux, but hormonal. I didn't notice any change in reflux, but my period stopped, and I had other hormonal side effects.

I've been on it since December for pain control with none of those issues, but I know each one of us is different.

My doctor also had me try baclofen because even though pantazrapole does help my heartburn it did not touch the persistent belching problem I have 24/7 for past 6 months. Unfortunately the baclofen didn’t help that either. Seems to help my fibromyalgia muscles a little.
One logical reason behind it was that I have esophogeal dysmotility but then again relaxing and slowing it down even further did not help - though maybe in theory it would stop spasms.
