My 15 year old son is the one with GERD, erosive esophagus and hitial hernia
So my 15 year old son is the one with GERD, erosive esophagus and hitial hernia. I'm at WalMart with my 2 aunts and grandma shopping. I decided to buy my son his cereal, which is frosted flakes. He eats cereal maybe 3 times a week if that even. My one aunt who thinks she knows everything about the "gut" and just has to tell you all about it. She sees what I am buying and says "And you wonder why Kobe has all these stomach issues!" It took every ounce of energy in me not to go off on her. No my son was actually born with these conditions but because non of the treating doctors would listen to me over his life span thus far would listen it got this bad! Come on frosted flakes caused his stomach issues, did she have any clue how dumb she sounded?! Okay rant over......
COMMENT:
Jackie Bennett
Maybe, just maybe you should go off on her. I find if you allow people to continue to treat you like that it gets worse.
Kelly PiJuan
I bite my tongue out of respect for my grandma. Let me catch my aunt alone, just once.... I have had words with her in the past about other things she thought she was little miss know it all about.
Cher Polchenko
Wouldn't cause it but all that sugar and bleached stuff is gonna aggravate it
Cher Polchenko
But everyone is different. He'd tell you if it was upsetting his tummy
Terry Carson
Yup but that is pure processed crap. If we all ate healthy from the start we would not be here in these groups. The only way to health and maintaining it is to give the body what it needs. Grandma never had those type of stuff the food companies are making and marketing today. Nobody needs that.
Kelly PiJuan
My son was born with these issues. Again he eats it maybe 3 days a week. I don't need your opinions on how foods today are not healthy as I know this already. My son eats tons of fruits and vegetables and I cook according to his diet. Having a bowl of frosted flakes a few times a week wont kill him. He's still a kid! It's bad enough he can't eat what all his typical teenager friends eat like pizza and soda. So yes if he wants frosted flakes I will allow it. So if anyone else is going to comment on how bad that cereal is....keep it to yourself please!
Jackie Bennett
Your right Kelly. Nothing wrong with treats.
Cathy Anglin Mattioni
I don't know--I think I wouldn't go shopping with them anymore, unless they depend on you to take them. Some stress is just not worth it, she'll never get it.
Kelly PiJuan
I primarily went to be with the other aunt as she lives out of town and I wanted to be with her. Sadly so did everyone else.

Most commercially made cereal is full of carcinogenic ingredients.
Michael A Dentzer
A lot of these ingredients are for enhancing flavor and also getting your kids addicted to the food.
Kelly PiJuan
The rest of my sons diet is sugar free, gluten free (for the most part), and GERD friendly. I really don't seem the harm. Kinda like those who might have a candy bar once in awhile, or fast food once in awhile. Well my sons treat is cereal. The rest of the time it is eggs, oatmeal, or other home cooked meals. I am not feeding my son processed foods daily. You don't know me and I don't know you, so before you make assumptions and make a generalized comment, just stick to what I posted and leave it at that please. I didn't ask for parenting tips, or what to feed my child for that matter. I work in the health care field and know how to stick to strict diets according to his restrictions.
Lynne Marie
I am finding if i get organic treats for my kids we don't have stomach issues. Seems the GMO, roundup ready wheat just makes us ill. But that is just us, we must be sensitive.
Kelly PiJuan
We just cut a ton of stuff out over the past maybe 3 years now. If he cheats he does get sick and I always know it right away. This is his one favorite thing since he was real little. It doesn't make him sick and as he puts it makes him feel normal. I wont argue with him on it. I measure the amount he gets and like I said it's max 3 times a week.
Lea Wilkin
Sorry, Terry Carson, your comment about eating healthy and no one would need to be here is wrong. I eat (and always have) a 90% vegetarian diet with a little lean meat. I don't drink alcohol, smoke, eat processed/take away food and ate very little chocolate and I still ended up on this site. My GERD is triggered by most things on the acid grid. If Kelly Marie son has found something that won't trigger the issue then let it be. I'm tired of being told that my stomach issues are caused by a bad diet when even my doctors can't work out why, at age 48, I suddenly developed GERD with nothing underlying and a good diet/exercise routine.
Kelly PiJuan
Exactly and like I have been saying all along my son was BORN with these issues according to his GI Dr and all the tests that have been done on him!!!! It had nothing to do with what he had to eat! Yes I refined our diet as illnesses arose between the two of us.
Terry Carson
It's all fine people we are all different and glad some find the foods or so called foods that make you happy. Their is no easy answers or pills that will fix the issues only yourself.
Kelly PiJuan
Terry Carson
if the way my son eats if the cause of his issues, please explain how the Dr said he had since birth then? He has had issues since birth? He was only on breast milk, then special formula.....right there proves your view wrong. My child wasn't eating processed foods at 24 hrs old when he had his first bout of projectile vomiting........sorry keep it moving.
Terry Carson
So sorry to hear his issues and really everyone else too but bottom line these foods are bad for you just like smoking, these things were never made for you to be healthy and no body will say they are other than the corporations that profit from it. If you don't think that then thats fine too and sure enjoy the things that make you feel good but always listen to your body as it will tell you what it likes. Good health to us all.

I have a couple of Aunts that I can't stand. I cut one of them off several years ago after she told me I should have moved back East. She then got nailed in Hurrican Sandy and recently in the snow bowl of Boston. Boo hoo.
Cher Polchenko
Once in awhile shouldn't hurt. If he's not complaining than it may not be a trigger for him. I know it's tough. My daughter can't have much treats either

Gerd is all about food choices. It may not be the original cause but it sure changes everything once you have it. It is hard to he quiet when you know you can alleviate their suffering by making simple but difficult changes. If you read about leaky gut, you'll see that just a little crap keeps your system inflamed and not working correctly.
Kelly PiJuan
I already follow a GERD approved diet.......I am about to delete this post and remove myself from this group if it is all about people forcing their opinions on their diets.....geez I came for SUPPORT not opinions when I didn't ask for them!!! Again I work in the health care field I know how to follow a diet......ugh
Summer Green
Kelly if you are going to rant, you kinds have to accept when people disagree. No one has been rude or unkind. It's a great community. I appreciate all of the different views, who knows if you'll hear something new and it brings healing.
Kelly PiJuan
I understand that, and again I have stated I know all of this stuff. I am not new to this stuff is all I am saying. I am repeating myself over and over. Not only do I work in the field but I did my own research once my son was diagnosed. My son has not had any chocolate in a year since being diagnosed, no red sauce, garlic, fried foods, citric fruits I could go on and on. Then the year before that we cut out most gluten in our diet but his frosted flakes due to my having Celiacs, now we also eat sugar free foods as diabetes runs in the family.....sorry if I am going off on a rant as you call it but I feel attacked because God forbid I allow MY kid to eat a cereal once in awhile! He doesn't eat like a typical teenager his age in America so cut me some slack here! If him eating this cereal makes him feel like a NORMAL teenager to him, then yes I will allow it! If YOU don't like it, then keep it moving, don't comment. I just needed to vent about my being frustrated with my interaction with a family member, not feel like I am being attacked in here as well.......whether it is true or not it is how I felt.

No one is attacking you. People just wanted to point out that food does make a difference, but you already know that. You called it a rant, that's why I labeled it that. Sorry the responces upset you. Brush it off. Your a good mama.
Kelly PiJuan
Did you read all the comments......some said diet caused my sons issues. He's had this problem from birth so no it didn't. It didn't help it cause we were unaware of the issue until last year. It's just people have been repeating the diet thing over and over, please read all the comments......a bowl of cereal once a day MAYBE three times a week won't kill him, that's all I am saying.

Diet has caused this for some (adults ). I'm sure you know your child. For me, a tiny bit of gluten/grains makes me sicker than a dog. It's all or nothing for me, which I think other people experience too. You are the best judge for your child. Don't forget your kid won't miss teenage foods if you have a positive attitude and provide other great alternative, not replacements, but other choices. Best of luck Kelly. Again, sorry you are frustrated.
