Antibiotics that caused Acid reflux
So went to hospital last night to get a second opinion, waited for six hours. Told the nurse I had been on antibiotics that caused Acid reflux, then was given meds omeprozole but this gave me bad heart burn and an upset stomach so my doctor decided I had to come off all meds and let my body deal with it. After coming off the meds all except the lump feeling stopped but I was only eating mashed up potatoe for four days, Well the doctor looked down my throat and said well it's not red, I asked if she could see to the bottom where the lump feeling was and she admitted no. She told me the same as my doctor, it's the effects of allergic reaction go home and let your body deal with it. I asked her what foods to avoid as I'd been on a liquid diet for a week with no improvements, she said eat what you like as long as it's not to spicy and it's soft. I eat a tin of spaghetti hoops today and dear lord I have heart burn, my throat is so painful I can't swallow, it feel heavy and the lump feels worse. I feel like no one is listening to me or treating me, I'm just being left to suffer. Can anyone suggest what to do now?
COMMENTS:
Maria Mercieri
If it was me I would insist to have an endoscopy to examine the digestive track.
Nyasha Madekubveni
The same with dear ,jst cmng from the doctor and was told to hve an endoscopy.
Lynda Cooke
Can they X-ray the area? Im terrified of an endoscopy, I have a bad gag reflex, Im going back to the gp next week, hopefully he will be nice this time. Went to holland and Barrett's and they suggested Manuka honey, just bought a little sample pot. It really works for me, made me throats feel a little better
Christie Azer
They sedate you. It's super easy. You blink and it's done. I had no post op discomfort. You really need an endoscopy to know anything for sure.
Maria Mercieri
They can put you to sleep for an endoscopy. They can do a barium swallow test where you drink a thick mixture and they X-ray while you swallow. Sometimes it's certain foods that can cause these problems but it's best to get a proper check.
Lynda Cooke
I will ask for one, what do you think to his suggestion that I will go back to normal once all the meds are out of my system? He thinks six weeks. Also how long until the reflux does permanent damage?
Lynda Cooke
I've been for a colonoscopy and that wasn't bad, loved the gas and air lol.
Claire Lynas
Lynda Cooke You really need an endoscopy hun! Ask for sedation, it is a very quick procedure.
I have had it done twice, my third time will be this Fri. It's really not that bad if you're sedated.
Claire Lynas
You could also ask for a barium swallow.
Cheryl Walker
You need a GI Dr. They did an endoscopy when they did the colonoscopy for me with sedation.
Elaine Marie
Endoscopy is easy. You don't even know anything was done. You just wake up and go home. Don't even be afraid of it. Had 3 already.
Kathryn Wilkinson
I wouldn't worry about permeant damage at this point. Mine is damaged but it took years of being untreated. For now I'd suggest since you don't do well on ppi even though their are other they've could've had you try, at least try an acid reducer like Pepcid or Zantac. It should give you some relief. Also try an antihistamine like Benadryl at night and Allegra for the daytime since this is an allergic reaction. You should really get an endoscopy done. You'll be sedated and it's quick. Also since you've barely been able to eat I suggest making smoothies with ingredients you can tolerate so you can get some nutrients in you. You need nutrients to heal faster and properly.
Lynda Cooke
Thankyou so much xx I will try a smoothie. Your much nicer than my gp he said 'I wouldn't worry, it's not like your going to waste away'
Kathryn Wilkinson
Lynda Cooke oh you're welcome I hope you find some relief. I think you need a new gp. That's no way to treat a patient and your ER was rude, but they usually are rude lol
Chris Moss
That is not a very sympathetic reply, . id tell you you go through this, be hungry and in pain all the time just to be told you won't waste away.

Tomato products are a well known heart burn trigger. I would read up on heartburn triggers and not eat those, as a start.
Lynda Cooke
I actually knew that but I hadn't heartburn since coming off the meds so I thought that part was over and all I was waiting for was my throat to heal. How wrong I was. I hope to God I don't have to deal with this forever cry xx.
Sean Neimeyer
I was completely sedated with anesthesia when I had an endoscopy. It was nothing.
Debbie Einhorn Saraceno
I'm. Nurse and have done many endoscopies and you won't even remember having one. It's super easy and safe. You have to insist on having one. Doesn't sound like your Dr really cares. It's sad.. we must watch out for ourselves. It's all about Money..
Abby Laine Impson
Try Zantac 150 mg before bed. It helped me more than prilosec! I'd take it several weeks before you determine if it's helping or not.
Abby Laine Impson
If you just quit your PPI you probably had bad acid rebound. You could start slowly weaning off your Prilosec. like take it every other day with a Zantac in between. google how to do it.
Lynda Cooke
I don't know what you talking about I'm now not on anything? He literally said I have to let my body deal with it and come back in two weeks, I have no meds
Abby Laine Impson
Did you ever take omeprosole?
Abby Laine Impson
That's prilosec. I don't think you should just have to deal....If you got acid reflux from antibiotics I doubt it would just disappear from waiting. You poor thing! I'd try Zantac...it's a step down from omeprozole!
Abby Laine Impson
I would eat nothing acidic at all, and try to eat very healthy. Green salads, fruit smoothies, low sugar, chicken broth, soup, etc. I'd take probiotics too b/c you were on antibiotics. I think you need an ENT and not a regular Dr. An ENT can look down your throat.
Lynda Cooke
Abby Laine Impson yes I had a reaction to it, it gave me really bad heartburn and an upset stomach
Donna DiMartino Gaffney
Abby Laine Impson or try nexium...prilosec was terible 4 me too!
Lynda Cooke
Can I ask because mine was caused by an allergic reaction will it go away one day? Or now I've had acid reflux this time will it be here forever
David Wayne Freitas
I suffer an allergic form of reflux. Avoid all tomato products and all nightshade plants. All dairy and nuts and soy as well. That's a start. Keep eating the stuff you do and you may be forced into a diet like mine unfortunately, the AIP diet, which is no fun at all.
Lynda Cooke
David Wayne Freitas sorry to hear that, how long have you had it for?
David Wayne Freitas
The past year clinically, but could have been longer. I've taken otc Nexium for years.
Donna DiMartino Gaffney
David Wayne Freitas also, make sure that any meds that say to "take with food" that you take them with food otherwise you will create more stomach acid! oops! wrong person, meant 4 Lynda!
Nicole Mcdonald
Try and eat a balanced meal. Large breakfast (not tomato sauce) then have a yogurt or a bit of fruit inbetween then have a small portion lunch (either a sandwich or wrap) then have a light snack then have a low portion dinner (do not have dessert). Dont drink anything while eating..wait an hour after eating before u drink some water. And the best thing....just flush urself out with allloooottttt of water. Stay away from lollies, tomatoes, spicy foods, orange juice, icecream, chocolate, cake, pies, sausage rolls, hotdogs, cheese, onion, garlic butter, soft drinks, alcohol and spaghetti. Theres alot more but these are the main ones.
Agnieszka Antoniak
You can drink soda water for quick relief from heartburn , avoid carbs like pasta , and white bread. Avoid and tomato based pasta. You need oats they help with acid reflux and try to drink some cider vinegar with warm water if you can as long as you are not taking any medicine. Plain food like baked potato with some plain chicken. You need few weeks to heal the stomach. Supplement again if you are not taking any other medicine you can try mastic gum at night before bed. Take magnesium and zink during the day if you have not kidney problems. To help to heal the stomach take either slippery elm or marshmallow root powder. The powder will coat your stomach.
Kathleen Tunnicliffe
There are 12 trigger foods You need to avoid, caffeine, mint, tomato, fried, fatty, chocolate, citrus, alcohol, onion, garlic, tea and coffee. Sugar, wheat, gluten and soy are pretty common triggers as well. You really do need an endoscopy to rule out any nasties and to ease your mind, anxiety is a huge part of reflux. I've had two and it isn't a big deal, you end up having a lovely little snooze.
Bev Armstrong
I cannot eat canned soups or Spaghetti-o's because of preservatives, but that's most all "processed" foods. Go back to eating food in it's most natural state, but you can still saute, steam, bake and cook your food and doesn't have to be eaten raw. If I do choose to fry or saute, I either use no grease or just a little olive oil. I stay away from "all" white foods and night shade vegetables. Ginger root and garlic added to chicken broth seems to be good in soothing my reactive throat and acid reflux. Try an elimination diet to discover your own trigger foods!
Lynda Cooke
I'm writing a food diary to help. Woke up this morning and the lump in my throats seems to have shifted lower and I have a full blown cold :-( I feel like I can't breath. I just keep saying to myself if you can talk you can breath :-(
Bev Armstrong
I understand exactly how you feel, my throat will feel like there's a lump in it or when I would unknowingly eat a trigger food, my throat will close up and that's scary! I was left to my own devices on this also until I spoke to my pharmacist and the owner of my health food store. My journey began years ago when I got H-Pylori in my gut then the doctor finally discovered that after a few visits, then I got a stomach full of ulcers, then irritable bowel syndrome, GERD/acid-reflux, then diverticulitis. Oh yeah... stay away from corn and all corn products as it already has a fungus mold right in the seed before even planting and can cause gut and digestive problems. Taking an active culture probiotics, the kind that is refrigerated and has an expiration date can help the whole body regulate and try to heal!!!
Bev Armstrong
Lynda Cooke, call your regular physician and get an appointment because he knows your history and insist on an endoscopic test so it can rule out any obstruction.
Michaela Villiers-Kendall
Lynda, YOU are not listening to all those people on this site that gave you some really good advice, and I'll say it one more time; If antibiotics started all of this, then that is a signal, along with your throat pain and allergic reaction, that you have a GUT FLORA IMBALANCE; Cut out the foods that make it worse and take the natural remedies that make it better. Period.😀
Lynda Cooke
That was a bit rude and that's not what my doctor or the hospital said which as my point, they said I had to start eating more and introducing more food, which I did. They said only cut out spicy food, in fact three doctors have said the same. I only came on here because I was panicking and thought it would be comforting.
Michaela Villiers-Kendall
Lynda Cooke It's not rude, it's telling it like it is for your own sake. Every one on here is giving you the benefit of their (bitter) experience and it's something doctors won't tell you. Nobody said eat less food, they said eat the right foods for your gut's recovery.
Chris Sharp
I dont know why yhey say to cut out spicy food because natural ginger, turmeric and garlic do wonders for me
Donna DiMartino Gaffney
Lynda Cooke except that you don't have a DIAGNOSIS yet!!!
Michaela Villiers-Kendall
Chris Sharp Those are good for the gut.
Donna DiMartino Gaffney
Chris Sharp ginger is very good...garlic, not so much but some can deal with it
Michaela Villiers-Kendall
Garlic is good at killing harmful bacteria if the reflux isn't too bad. I can take it now my microbiome is in better balance. The point is to eat what the beneficial bacteria like and don't eat what harms them and promotes harmful bacteria. Most of us don't know this 'war' is going on inside us--until the 'bad guys' start to win, for various reasons, but all to do with our modern day living.
Donna DiMartino Gaffney
the med she gave you is Prilosec & it disagreed with me too! I switched to Nexium 40mg & that has helped so maybe try Nexium. She's also wrong abou the foods....you should avoid acidic foods & eat alkaline based foods instead....like plain baked potato or plain turkey breast, maybe plain yogurt but no onion, no processed foods, no coffe, no soda & breads & cakes are bad too! You can google foods "for GERD"...good luck!
Kathryn Wilkinson
Just curious Lynda did you try any our advice and get some relief?
Lynda Cooke
Yes, I no longer have heart burn and my upset stomach has gone. But my throat really hurts, I had slight relief earlier when I ate something a bit rougher, the pain is awful
Kathryn Wilkinson
I'm glad you got the heartburn and stomach pain down. Now hopefully your throats will begin to heal :)
Mimi Dede
Spaghetti loops!! That's solid tomato acid. Stay away from tomatoes. Look up GERD diet.
